Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling — Review

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling

mindy book

I don’t know if I’d call myself a Mindy Kaling super fan [but I totally am one]. I didn’t love Kelly Kapoor when I first watched The Office, but she grew on me. When Mindy launched her own show, The Mindy Project, I was SO FREAKING EXCITED. And Mindy has not disappointed me! So, as a Mindy Kaling [super] fan, I HAD to read this book.

First off, I love the cover. Cute, understated, a little off, and a great title. The size of the book is not intimidating, which is always a plus. I found the stories to be incredibly funny and believable. I loved hearing about her interactions with other people of fame–BJ Novak, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wigg, and Will Arnett. I really enjoyed this book! I think it boils down to this–if you’re a fan of Mindy Kaling and her work, you’ll like this book. If you don’t like Mindy [what’s wrong with you?], don’t read this because your sense of humor is lacking. My only regret is not buying the enhanced version. I should get on that.

Synopsis from Amazon:

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”
Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!
In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

September 2013 Birchbox Review

I realized that I never posted a review for my September Birchbox, so here it is! The theme for the month was Heritage, and it was Birchbox’s anniversary month. First look:

I liked the inspirational card. Nice touch, Birchbox! Here’s a look at the products I found inside:

amika Blow Up Spray – I haven’t used this yet, and I’m not sure I will. I have SO many sea salt sprays and texture products, so I may pass this one along. Not disappointed to receive it, though. I feel like it’s a great value to get this in a box!

Caudalie Make-up Remover Cleansing Water – I have sensitive skin, so this was a win for me! I’ve only tried it once or twice so far. It removed my makeup and didn’t irritate my skin at all. I found it interesting that you don’t have to rinse your face after using it.

RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer in Hedge Fund – Full size product, $10 value! I expected this to be a dark, mossy green, but it actually looked lighter and shimmery…almost like a Christmas green, which of course pleased me! I’m very happy with this product. And it alone equals the price of the box!

Egyptian Magic All-Purpose Skin Cream – I’m not big on cream or moisturizer samples in foil or paper packaging. That being said, there’s a pretty good amount of product in this one. I really appreciate that it’s all-natural and moisturizing. Plus it’s the beauty extra, so no real complaints!

Coastal Scents Eye Shadow Day to Night – I think it’s great to get a mini palette in a subscription box! I can’t use Coastal Scents, so I passed this along in my Cara Box. The colors are great for fall!

Here’s a look at the info card from this box (RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer swatched on card):

My rating for the September Birchbox: A-

October 2013 Birchbox Review

My Birchbox arrived today, and I couldn’t be happier with the contents! This month’s theme is Beauty Buzz. First look:

I instantly perked up when I saw a bright Tiffany-ish blue box next to a Benefit product! The first thing I took out of the box and examined was POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer in Flowering Fuchsia. POP Beauty seems to be showing up in lots of boxes lately!

Here’s the product swatched on my hand (no flash, indoor light). I was surprised to find this tube of lip gloss has an applicator wand! It’s paddle-style is similar to the Whip Hand Cosmetics’ Lip Hit applicators.

The product went on a little thick at first, but it wouldn’t take long to get used to applying. It felt smooth and wasn’t sticky. There’s a slight tingle and a minty-ish scent. I think this is the full size, which is $14.

Birchbox info: A British makeup pro created this sheer gloss, which plumps and hydrates with jojoba oil. The cute paddle-style applicator makes for precise lines.

I couldn’t keep from grabbing the Benefit box any longer! Benefit Fake Up concealer is loved by many, and I can’t wait to try it. I’m really glad Birchbox sent me the right shade! I received 01 Light, which is the best shot at working with my super paleness. It’s a pretty good sized sample. The full size is $24.

20131009-191406.jpg Birchbox info: Brighten tired-looking eyes with this hydrating under eye concealer and moisturizer combo. Gently swipe under each eye and use your ring finger to blend.

The next product was a Birchbox Find. It doesn’t count as a regular sample, it’s just a bonus! This item was revealed in the sneak peek video this month.

It’s Chapstick Hydration Lock in Vanilla Creme. I’m a sucker for vanilla, so I’m happy with this bonus product! It also came with a $1 off coupon. I love me some coupons. It appears to be completely sheer and can be used as a lip primer. Here’s a shot of the product.

20131009-191944.jpg (That’s Julep’s Christina on my nails. The color is actually a deep red-orange with microglitter shimmer! I know it’s time to repaint them, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I only used one coat over Ulta base coat and it didn’t chip for a week!)

I saved the beautiful box for last. Inside, I found Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser and Pure Muslin Cloth. I’m really excited to use this product! I hope it’s not too much for my sensitive skin to take.

20131009-192248.jpg How cute is it that they print on the inside of the box lid? Loving this company already.

20131009-192408.jpg I like that they included a small instruction booklet. The full size cleanser is $21.50 and 2 cloths are $6.

Birchbox info on cleanser: UK favorite that uses a two-step ritual to purify and exfoliate. A Birchbox exclusive! Massage into skin. With muslin cloth, wipe off gently in small circles, from the center out.

Birchbox info on cloth: Ditch your harsh exfoliation and use this pure muslin cloth, which gently polishes skin. Rinse with warm water and wipe off cleanser. Hang to dry.

My rating for the October Birchbox: A

August 2013 Birchbox Review

The theme of this month’s Birchbox was Finishing School. I was VERY happy with my August Birchbox!!August Birchbox

I received these products:

Whish Exfoliating Body Wash – This body wash is amazing! It smells wonderful (coconut milk) and leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth. I didn’t find it to be quite as harsh as some exfoliating products, which was nice. I received Whish shave cream in last month’s Birchbox. I’m loving Whish products!

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Product – I was really excited to receive this product as I see it advertised in EVERY magazine. It’s a really good sized sample and feels weightless on my hair. I can never have enough leave-in products!

(MALIN+GOETZ) vitamin e face moisturizer – This moisturizer hydrated my super dry skin. It’s safe for sensitive skin and can also be used as a primer.

stila stay all day liquid lipstick – I was super excited to receive this product in my birchbox. It is extremely pigmented. I like the formula–it goes on as a liquid and dries immediately. It’s a bit hard to work with…if you don’t put in on perfectly, you may spend awhile cleaning up a mess. This red is a little much for me, but I think it’d be great in a nude shade.

Whish hair inhibiting deodorant swipes – I haven’t tried these yet, but I’m expecting great things since they’re a Whish product. They claim to “tackle odor and slow hair growth in one swipe.”

My rating for the August Birchbox: A

The Finishing School Birchbox really impressed me! I’d been getting frustrated with Birchbox because their boxes have been paling in comparison to ipsy, but this month they pleasantly surprised me! (Check out my August ipsy review here.) Birchbox only costs $10 a month and you can sign up for a subscription here.
